When Mira Costa High School’s Jazz Band arrived in Boston to compete at Berklee College of Music’s Jazz Festival, they knew they were in for some tough competition.  The 49 year old high school festival (the country’s largest and oldest) has long been dominated by east coast public and private schools, with Princeton High School winning 13 years in a row.   This year, 139 schools participated. So when the Californians were announced in 2nd place in the Big Band large ensemble category, Bands Director, Joel Carlson and his students were ecstatic.

Individual Mira Costa students were recognized: Jules Gilliam on trumpet and Jesse Eads on bass guitar for Outstanding Musicianship. Judge’s Choice Spotlight awards were also given to Jules Gilliam and Max Rohde on bass guitar.
