How to Register for Band Classes, Marching Band, and Colorguard at Mira Costa

- Any student may register for Colorguard as their PE class. To do so, select “Flags” during course enrollment.
- For the 2022-23 school year, any music student (not just those enrolled in band class) may join the Marching Band for PE credit. Marching Band practice takes place after school. Students enrolled in Orchestra or Choir as part of their school day who want to earn their PE credit and experience what it is like to be part of Marching Band or Colorguard can select “Marching Band” during course enrollment to register.
- Incoming/new students wishing to register for any ensemble class such as Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony or Jazz Band (our curricular band classes that take place during the school day and fulfill both Costa’s “VAPA” requirement and the UC/CSU “F” Requirement) should register for Symphonic Band. Student placement will then be adjusted based upon each individual’s Assessment with the Band Director.

ABOUT THE BAND PROGRAM
Under the direction of Joel Carlson, the GRAMMY® award-winning music program for the bands at Mira Costa High School (MCHS) in Manhattan Beach, CA is rooted in a tradition of and a commitment to comprehensive music education through performance.
With the intent of providing each student performer with experiences that will result in their finding wonder and excitement in the creative endeavor, the highest quality literature and opportunities are selected to encourage the greatest individual musical growth, depth of experience, and development of a life-long appreciation for music and the arts.
Band Boosters works in partnership to provide financial and volunteer support to MC Bands. Band Boosters families support the quality instruction and the 45+ curricular and extracurricular experiences for our students.
