A quick guide to some of the band vocabulary.

Band Aide

A band parent or chaperone that attends parts of the Marching Band camps in the Summer. This is a low-key volunteer position in which your presence is the point. Expect long stretches of monitoring with occasional opportunities to help students in need. This volunteer helps keep the students hydrated and healthy.

Battery

The marching percussion – often snares, toms, quads, and bass drums – in the marching band and indoor drumline.

Call Time

Students should be at their event and ready to begin before this time.

Front Ensemble

The non-marching percussion, usually at the front of the field, in the marching band and indoor drumline.

Guard

Aka the Color Guard.

Hornline

The brass and woodwind instruments that march on the field in marching band.

IDL

An initialism for Indoor Drumline, a Winter/Spring percussion ensemble that performs at competitions.

Orange Box, The

A storage bin (the original was orange in color) that is used as part of volunteer duties. It sometimes contains items for football games. The “New” orange box is appropriately labeled.

Quad, The

AKA The Mustang Mall, the large open area in between buildings at Mira Costa High School.

Room 66

The percussion room, an actual room on campus at Mira Costa.

Silver Box

Silver-colored box situated just outside of Mr. Carlson’s office. It is locked and secured. Hardcopy forms, checks, etc. should be deposited here.
